New York City Ballet

Guided equally by a dreamlike piano trio and sovereign strings, Pontus Lidberg’s monochromatic but multi-layered The Shimmering Asphalt is both musing and mechanical, taking viewers on a hypnotic journey into the intricacies of a machine-like collective.

We worked closely with the NYCB and choreographer Pontus Lidberg to create a visually modern, yet stark animated short to support the piece’s world premiere in New York.

The “Shimmering" Yet Harsh, Structured Nature of City Life.

Modern, stark, severe, darkly whimsical. Where dancers move with monsters. These were a few of the themes that inspired the visual development for the short film.

The technique relied heavily on handmade textures, drawings and rotoscope to create the dreamlike world of a mechanical city fairy tale.
